what’s work? - Rising Artists Program

Selection Criteria

We are seeking emerging artists who:

  • Are current college students, recent graduates (within 2 years), or early-career artists seeking exhibition opportunities

  • Show strong artistic potential and commitment to developing their creative practice

  • Are interested in mentorship opportunities with established working artists

  • Represent diverse voices and perspectives, with particular focus on BIPOC artists and HBCU connections

  • Demonstrate how their work relates to themes of symmetry, duality, balance, or the "What's Work" concept

  • Are available for exhibition-related activities, mentorship sessions, and workshop participation

  • Show eagerness to learn and grow within a supportive artistic community

Portfolio Requirements:

  • Submit 5-8 recent works that demonstrate artistic potential and growth

  • Show consistency in developing artistic voice

  • Include experimental or developmental pieces that show your learning process

  • Demonstrate technical competency appropriate for your experience level

Commission Structure

  • Commission Rate: 10% (reduced rate for emerging artists)

  • Commission Purpose Explanation: While most commercial galleries charge 40-60% commission and even artist-friendly cooperatives usually charge 30-40%, Symmetry operates with a community-first model. Our 10% rate for rising artists is even lower than our already artist-supportive 15% rate for working artists, recognizing that emerging artists need maximum support to launch their careers.

  • How commission funds will be used: Commission proceeds directly fund mentorship programming, workshop facilitation, career development resources, and documentation projects that continue to elevate and support emerging artists - essentially reinvesting your success back into creating more opportunities for the next generation of artists.
